It is simply tempera, (egg, or casein), as an under painting for oil color or a mat varnish color. The ground is the tempera or half chalk ground. Schneider & Co. N.Y. sell an absorbent or tempera canvas which is practically the same. It can be rolled. I grind my own colors which I buy in the powder from Schneider & Co. N.Y. and Fezandie & Sperrle. N.Y.
