Captain Saml/ Place, Asst Sub Asst Commr for Sumter District reports: Since my last report the gathering of the crops has been completed, and the result shows that planting has proved a total failure this year both to the employers and employees. The high price at the commencement of the year induced planters, to plant largely in Cotton, the culture of which owing to the extremely high price of provisions and fertilizers, made Cotton growing this year more than ordinarily expensive.

The yield  of cotton is estimated at about two Bales to the hand, which is below the average yield, although the season it is said has been the most favorable during the last ten years.

The yield of Corn, Rice, and small grains, is about the average, but so little was planted, that it is hardly worth taking into consideration. From personal observation
