Gen. O. O. Howard,

Sir: Understanding that it is the intention of the Federal authorities to re-establish the Beauro of "Freedmen and Abandoned Lands" in this State, I make this application to you for the for the appointment of Agent or Sub-Agent for this county or district. I have served in various capacities in the Federal Army during the late war to put down the Rebellion - from private to Capt. of a company in the 52d Reg. Mounted Inft. - in which capacity I was acting at the close of said war. I have been citizen of this county for the last seven years - and have a general acquaintance with the citizens & wants of the Freedmen, here, and think that my administration of their affairs would give satisfaction to all concerned. Hoping that you will forward this application to the proper officer for examination, with such endorsement as you can consistently make I remain respectfully &c &c.
James L. Strange
