I have the honor to herein submit a Brief of the Operations of the Bureau in this State, during the month of April 1868.

Aiken Bureau Sub District of
[[left margin]] Schools [[/left margin]] Bvt. Major L. Walker, Sub Asst Commissioner reports, "There are many small schools taught by freedpeople scattered through this Sub District which are of some advantage to the young children and are of service in preparing the community for a system of public instruction. There is scarcely any opposition now encountered from the Citizens in establishing schools. Indeed the sentiment of the better class of whites is reported to be favorable to them. But the for poverty of the freedmen themselves many more schools could be started. 
[[left margin]] Outrages [[/left margin]] On the 12th Ult. (April) report was received of the shooting of a negro on a plantation near Allendale, Barnwell District, and the murder of the perpetrator of the crime, on James A. Martin, immediately afterwards by other hands employed
