on the plantation. The affair created a good deal of excitement in the neighborhood and coming as it did but a few days before the election, I ordered a detachment of troops to proceed to the place and be ready to preserve the peace if necessary. 
[[left margin]] Outrages [[/left margin]] All the parties nearly, who were concerned in the killing of Mr Martin had been arrested before the troops reached Allendale and Mr Nerland had visited the plantation and saw that good order had been restored. The colored man who had been shot by Mr Martin had no part in the murder. The night before the election at Pleasant Lane, Edgefield District, two negroes were shot which encamped in the woods to await the opening of the polls No clue to the criminals has been found. 
A Coroners inquest was held at Blackville on the 28th Ult over the dead body of a negro who was found in the woods. The inquest found that he came to his death from the hands of some person unknown. 
Mr Nerland made an investigation of this case which implicated four white men as the criminals one of whom has escaped The other three had been arrested, and are now in my custody. 
On Saturday last a negro was shot in Blackville, but the last reports from him were favorable. The person who shot him, a Mr Graham, has made his escape.
