I mentioned to some of the citizens, the fact that I want to give my time & pay all expences, provided they would send their children. They took it as an insult, tried to discourage us in every possible way, abused us in their speeches & papers & in their public ways & called us any things but good. All this does not discourage us, and we are working briskly, though quietly, until we have worn away the gloom, that did surround us, & light begins to dawn upon our efforts. We have visited the poor, who are delighted with the idea of a school. We shall also start in one school, face the laboring class of colored & by the help of our great High Priest, we hope to break many sources of the prejudice that exists.
