deposited with Capt. Henry Sweeney, 60th U.S.C.T. and Supt of Freedmen at this Station - Several Thousand Dollars.  Bowman died in December of said year.  An Administrator was appointed by Capt. Sweeney to whom he turned over all the said money excepting the sum of Two Thousand Dollars ($2000.00) for which he executed notes.

In 1866, Jos Shaver married the widow of said Bowman, dec'd, and was appointed Guardian of William, son of said Bowman.

Capt. Sweeney had not yet paid his notes for said amount of Two Thousand Dollars ($200.00) and owing to unfortunate speculations could not - but owning property in this city he gave the said Shafer, as Guardian of said child, a mortgage on said City property consisting of a house and five (5) lots assuring Shafer, in presence of witnesses, that the property on which he had just given the mortgage was with that exception entirely unencumbered.  Shafer relying on this assurances accepted the mortgage.  Afterward it was found that three other mortgages were on the same property all prior to his.   The property will soon be sold, and at the present ruling rates will only pay the first and
