Courbet has composed the simple elements of the Ornans countryside with monumental directness in this warm and peaceful landscape of the artist's native region

Note: this painting is closely connected with one at the Metropolitan Museum, "Les Demoiselles de Village" of the same year.

The Madonna and Child are represented high on a dais, receiving the homage of three martyred saints, the brothers Giovanni and Paolo, and Pietro Martire.

The painting is a bozzetto for the altarpiece in the chapel of S. Lucia in the church of S. Pietro Martire, Naples, as stated by Dr. Hermann Voss.
