MONET, Claude (184-1926)

"CHAUMIERE A GUENEVILLE"

Pencil on beige paper 9" x 11-1/2"

Stamp of atelier lower right "Claude Monet"

Inscribed lower left: "Gueneville ler Mars 1967"

With this simple but most dignified drawing Money has perfectly captured the misty atmosphere which vibrates about this humble thatch cottage. The pure beauty of the shimmering light and air both contrasts and compliments the rustic simplicity of the subject.

The front of the cottage is seen from an angle, the left wall and roof being partially visible and only faintly indicated by the pencil strokes. The building consists of two stories - the first of stone while the second appears to be of timber. A stairway leads to a door opening into the center of the second floor. Above is a thatch porch; to the left is a grilled window.

The drawing combines firm heavy strokes of the pencil which define deep shadow areas with lighter and generally horizontal ones which render the various textures of the different surface areas of the building. Throughout the drawing are scattered rough pencil points, markings which so successfully help to capture the weather-worn appearance of the building as well as being means of creating the effect of irregular stonework such as the surface of the first story.

The easy directness of the rendering and the simple isolation of the subject on the field of paper, as well as the very incompleteness of the drawing, combine to give the whole an effect of eloquent monumentality.
