Dear Mr. Randall,

Ever so many thanks for your most pleasant and interesting letter of February 4th. In the meantime, Theresa Parker has explained this belated acknowledgment.

The ivory mirror back of "The Siege of the Castle of Love" remained so clearly in my mind, that the appearance of Daguerre disturbed me.

And lo and behold, delving anew into our files (a misfiling had evidently occurred), I am now able to clear up this mystery.

The ivory did stem from this firm, and it was actually billed to Henry Walters on December 1, 1928 - my father, as you may recall, passed away in 1923.

The pedigree is that it came from the Cistercian Abbey of Rhein in Styrie, as you stated. On the invoice was also mentioned a rather impressive bibliography, slightly more extended than the one already in your possession, and which should you care to have it, I will gladly forward.

Last but not least, I also wish to express my appreciation of your kind permission to reproduce it, with the credit line "The Walters Art Gallery". The photographs you were good enough to send are indeed precious, and I shall keep them if I may do so.

With best cordial greetings,

Yours,

Germain Seligman
