Dear Mr. Randall,

A very ambitious project, for it is rather late in the day, which would in a way be a sequent to my book, Merchants of Art, causes me to take up your time, which I hope you will not mind.

Among the precious medieval works of art which I am anxious to reproduce, if I have your permission, is the back of the delightful 14th century ivory mirror, "The God of Love at the Siege of His Castle", acquired by Mr. Henry Walters from my father a great many years ago.

However, in addition to your authorization, I would request a photograph, at my expense of course, for unfortunately I find no negative in my file.

Your help would be much appreciated, and would you also know whether it has a pedigree which could be added, for you may recall that all our Paris archives, including the reference to this ivory, were destroyed during the Nazi occupation.

Do excuse my importuning you with this matter, and thanking you in advance for whatever information you will be able to impart,

With all good wishes,

Sincerely,

Germain Seligman

P.S.: Enclosed is a copy of this letter which in the event, as I hope, that authorization is granted, you need only return to me with your initials under "Permission granted", as well as indicating the credit line which should accompany the reproduction. A self-addressed and stamped envelope is also enclosed.
