Dear Mr. and Mrs. Seligman:
The UCLA Art Council, an affiliate of the University of California at Los Angeles, is sponsoring as its forthcoming Annual Exhibition, Years of Ferment: The Birth of 20th Century Art. This exhibition will provide a visual and literary account covering the years from 1880 to World War I. It will open at the UCLA Art Galleries on January 24, 1965, and will subsequently be shown at the San Francisco Museum of Art, and later, at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

This exhibition is being organized as a highly specialized and educational look into history, and will deal with four aesthetic movements or traditions: Pont-Aven and the Nabis, the Fauves, the Cubists, and the Expressionists. A ninety page catalogue will emphasize and develop this scholarly approach. The clarifying concept underlying this exhibition will prove of great benefit to thousands of students at UCLA and in greater Los Angeles, and will attract those in the area who follow museum presentations. The caliber of Years of Ferment is compatible with past Art Council Annual Exhibitions, such as the Lipchitz Retrospective, the distinguished Picasso Exhibition, and the 18th Century French show.

In assembling such an exhibition, works must be found which reflect trends and dramatize specific periods with historic precision. Thus our request to borrow from your collection works listed on the enclosed loan forms is governed by the need of works for which essential substitutes of similar quality cannot readily be obtained. We hope you will consider this unique requirement and that you will add to the distinction and value of the exhibition by generously loaning the above to the three museums involved.

A loan form is enclosed for your convenience. The UCLA Art Council and the University are responsible for the costs of assembling and transporting loans. All works will be insured from the time they leave the walls of their owners until their return.
