September 22, 1954

My dear Miss Boggs:

Your letter of June 14th, which arrived in my absence, was duly acknowledged by my office, and as Mrs. T. D. Parker wrote to you, it was my intention to send you a photograph of the portrait by Degas upon my return to town. Please do not believe that my intentions or my desire of being helpful have changed. However, reading over your letter of June 14th, I hesitate to carry out your request in view of the fact that I notice only now your intention and hope of publishing your study in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts.

If I call your attention to the delicate questions that the publication of one of my paintings in this magazine may entail, you will understand my hesitation. On the other hand, should you wish to receive this photograph for keeping it in your files of records and references and with your pledge not to publish it without consulting me, I would gladly send you a print. I feel certain you will understand the quandary in which I am, and do not hesitate to answer me quite frankly on this topic.

Yours very sincerely,

Germain Seligman

P. S. For your information, you probably know that this portrait was published and reproduced in "Degas et son Oeuvre" by Paul Lemoisne, page 30 and 31, No. 65, and in "Degas," Cleveland Museum of Art, No. 5, February 5-March 9, 1947, Plate 4, as well as in some other catalogues.
