July 28th., 1941

Dear Sir:

We wish to thank you for your letter of July 24th., regarding Baron Edward von der Heydt's continued interest in the Benin Bronze figure, and are looking forward to receiving the letter to which you refer. Mails from Europe, as you know, are very irregular these days but we presume that it should reach us shortly.

In the meantime we are trying to contact the owner of the figure in an effort to obtain, as you suggest, a statement to the effect that the bronze was brought into this country prior to April 10th., 1940 and has been continuously within the confines of the United States since that date. In this connection may we remark that in similar cases we have been called upon to make statements that items had been imported prior to [[strikethrough]] June 17th., [[/strikethrough]] 1940. The only reason we mention this is to enable us to word the statement to be signed by the owner, in such a way as to make it acceptable to the authorities.

We are closing our galleries for the month of August and wonder therefore whether, should Baron von der Heydt's letter not arrive within the coming few days, we might not take this matter up in the very first days of September, without causing you any inconvenience.

Thanking you anew for the kindness of yourletter of the 24th., we are,

Yours very sincerely,
JACQUES SELIGMANN & CO., Inc.
