Dear Mr. Seligman:

Thank you so much for the photograph of the Isabey that you were kind enough to send down here. I have only had a chance to do a little work on this, but it's clear that the secret is not going to be uncovered in a minute. No-one seems to think that it can be from either Tasso or Ariosto. The date of the costumes is too late for it to be an incident in the Moorish wars in Spain. I have had a tentative look through the Salon catalogues that we have here, and the only picture of this general type that I can uncover is one that apparently has to do with the massacre on St. Bartholomew's Day, which clearly is not what is indicated here. It only goes to show that he occasionally did do pictures of this kind. I haven't given up yet, and unless you want the photograph back quickly, I'd like to have it around to do some more work.

I will look forward to having a real session with you when I am up in the city in the Fall. Meantime, I hope you have a most agreeable Summer.

Sincerely yours,
Joseph C. Sloane
