HAROLD STARK MISS LAURA VAN PAPPELENDAM THORNTON WILDER FREDERIC WOODWARD January 25, 1935 Dear Mr. Seligmann, You asked me to write you about the forthcoming exhibit of works by Seurat to be held by the Renaissance Society of the University of Chicago. The show will be held from February 5 to 25 and will consist of important paintings, drawings, sketches and studies, and though small, will include only the finest things. We are very anxious to include whatever excellent examples of the artist you have on hand and which would be available for that period. I know that you have the very beautiful study for "La Parade" as well as a series of drawings. If you feel that you can send us these we should like to have titles at your earliest convenience. Weiboldt Hall is a modern fire-proof building, constantly guarded and patroled. Naturally the society assumes all expenses of shipment. Works should read us not later than February 2 to insure proper installation. All in all we plan quite a Seurat festival. For the opening of the exhibit I will give a special lecture on "Seurat and the Evolution of La Grande Jatte," the subject of my monograph to be published in the Spring by the University of Chicago Press, the third in their series for the Renaissance Society, "Meaning in Art." Important collectors, museums and other notable dealers are lending works for the exhibit which will be the first showing of Seurat's art in the middle west. We hope for your cooperation in this venture. My best regards to Mr. Germain Séligmann and Mr. De Hauke. Sincerely,.
