[[underline]] DEPARTURE. [[/underline]]

It was now the end of the fourth year at St. Catherine's. Everyone had left, and, except for an old nurse I was alone in the big school-house. The principal had gone for her summer holidays, uninterested in a pupil who was about to leave the school for good.

I remember very little of that moment -- so important in my life, no one asked to see me, there was no warning, no advice. Had I forgotten past experiences? Was I in my usual trance state? I cannot say. Certain unimportant details remain... old Margaret, the nurse, packing my small trunk... the nasty naphtha balls she placed between the clothes --- [a new sailor-suit with a high starched collar that choked]... my brother's doctor waiting for me in the parlor, and then like in a dream, I left St. Catherine's Hall to return to my mother.
