The Professor has been,as I have already stated, one of the forerunners of Fascism. When Italy declared war he seemingly recanted, turning against the movement that had made him. At one time it seemed possible that his changed opinions and the obstreperous attitude of his wife might lead to difficulties with the present German Government, but the contrary has proved to be the case: he was exempted from making public demonstrations in their favour and what was more he received a promotion. But the man-hunters are still to be faced. Over the radio came the names of prominent Fascists destined to be shot on the arrival of the Allied armies in Central Italy. The Professor's name is among these. Should he wish to seek safety he can only do so by following the retreating Germans whom he hates,or by x hiding with the peasants round about here. The Professor himself was counting on the return of the King.
June 12th We have received notice from the Swiss Consulate that America intends repatriating all American subjects still remaining in Italy. We are asked to sign a document purporting to show that we are willing to leave, otherwise we are warned that our allowance may be stopped. To say that we are not apprehensive of the transition period facing us would be untrue. It is said here in Florence that the Communists will be given a free hand for two weeks (a sop to the Russian Cerberus) before order shall be installed by the Americans.
