Sunday, September 1
Family Workshop, 2 to 4 p.m., The Still-Life That Came to Life Artists often use a composition of ordinary objects as the subject for their paintings. But objects won't stay ordinary for long as the participants paint their way through a variety of styles. Workshop cost is $5 per family for Museum member or $6 per family plus the cost of admission for non-members. Fees include all art materials. Workshops are designed for children ages 5 to 12 with at least one adult companion. Per-registration is necessary; call (504)488-2631.

Storytelling, 1 and 2 p.m., Traveling Tales to Faraway Lands If you missed taking your summer vacation, storyteller John Lehon has just the event for you. Join in a journey to exotic locales, meet colorful characters and experience fascinating cultures in the non-traditional tour of NOMA's permanent collection. Free with Museum admission. Second Annual Dreux Van Horn Lecture, 3 p.m., Kathryn Johnson, Relooking at Looking How to Look in Museums: How Museums can Compete in the Age of Virtual Reality Johnson, chair of the Education Division, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, is the featured speaker in the second of a lecture series endowed by longtime NOMA volunteer Dreux Van Horn II. She will present a slide lecture on how museums are using principles of learning theory and marketing to provide visitors with a comfortable, user-friendly and fun environment. The lecture, in Stern Auditorium, is free with Museum admission.
