September - Page 4

Beginning September 15

Bistro Bruch, Sundays through November 3, 10 a.m. to noon - A special champagne brunch, accompanied by the sounds of live jazz and musette, will be offered each Sunday morning during Explorations in the City of Light in NOMA's Courtyard Café. Also in September, NOMA begins its art classes for children, including an art appreciation course for teen-agers. Children's Art Classes are conducted by two qualified art teachers and volunteer assistants. Teachers introduce their students to the permanent collection and special exhibitions then proceed to the classroom, where imagination and creativity are emphasized over technical skills. Classes provided students with an exciting atmosphere in which they can express their creativity by using art materials. Fall classes are on Saturdays from September 7 through October 12. The cost is $50 for NOMA member and $60 for non-members. The schedule is:

Mindscapes and Fantastic Lands, ages 5-7, 10 a.m.-noon, art classroom - Imagination and fantasy are some of the most important aspects of art making. Concentrating on their imaginative powers, students will produce paintings, drawings and sculpture from other lands, incorporating people and creatures which only the imagination can conjure.

Drawing and Painting with Confidence, ages 8-12, 1:30-3:30 p.m., art classroom - If you want to strengthen your drawing and painting skills, this is the class for you. Students can learn the basics of line, tone, color and composition without spoiling the fun. After visiting NOMA's permanent collection, students will explore a variety of painting and drawing materials such as pencil, charcoal, oil pastels and watercolor.

Art Appreciation for Teens, ages 13-18, 10 a.m.-noon, meets in galleries - This class is a fast-paced, lively discussion of a wide range of art-related topics using NOMA's collection as illustration. A typical session touches on topics of technique, the underlying philosophies of the artists and less-than-obvious meanings of the paintings. This is a non-studio, clean-hands class with no books, no homework - only learning for the fun of it!

The Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and closed Mondays and legal holidays. Admission prices are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors 65 and over, and $3 for children ages 3-17. Free admission for Louisiana residents is offered courtesy of Whitney National Bank every Thursday from 10 a.m. until noon.
