I sometimes think of my work as breath.
Breath is life.
Breath moves. It is inspiration and aspiration.
In and out.
Breath is likened to a feather in Indian lore. The soft movement in a feather makes breath visible.
Feathers belong to birds. Birds soar far. They seem to symbolize spirit, swinging into the unseen, the unknown. Spirit can go beyond the sun, the moon, the stars.

What I like about the art-in-architecture program of the General Services Administration (GSA) is the complete esthetic freedom accorded the artist. I have never accepted a commission which did not give absolute freedom. But GSA requires knowing what you are going to do. This is for criticism from the point of view of the needs of the building. So with some trepidation I took my model to Washington to face the GSA Design Review Panel. One smiling face was familiar and gave me courage. The architects spoke of sprinklers, heat, fire, water, and hazards from the public; but the piece itself was not in question.
