SAGAPOWACK
DAY III

Phil,

I'm obviously bananas and I want to take back some of the things I said about Louis. My sense of his possible unawareness is totally irrelevant. I love & have loved the paintings. I guess I hate the fear that Michael could club me with them & I am somewhat disturbed that I feel that Michael & Clem to varying degrees have over-manipulated Louis's paintings in a seemingly honest effort to get them (the ptgs) their due.

What I love about your essay is the utter & absolute lack on contentiousness (except for the poor Russian - what would Armond Hammer do if he ever read it? ha!). The love of art & the artists is expressed & feels real & important & worthwhile without any reuse of condescension & this is the thing I always get from Michael-his desire to make abstract art intellectually sound & strong so that I would stand up to the powers & scrutiny of the likes of Stuart Hampshire & Stanley Cavell (to take the highs & the lows) always left me.
