Recognized today as the museum's "old masters" are Cézanne's Le Château Noir, Kandinsky's Composition and Mondrian's Composition (left to right below). All of them were once considered painters' jokes played on a gullible public. Since 1945, the museum had purchased Jean Dubuffet's Joë Bousquet in Bed (top), Jackson Pollock's Number 1 (above), Marisol's The Family (below).
