Dear Dr. Stanton:

I have been hired by Adelaide Horton and Susan deMenil to research a book proposal for them. Adelaide and Susan want to produce a book that explores the relationship between chief executives, the designers they hire, and the corporate environment that they both produce. For the proposal, I have been asked to produce material concerning the collaboration of Florence Knoll and the Knoll group with the Rockefellers (the family offices, The Chase Bank headquarters and Rockefeller University) as well as the work that she did for CBS.

Other people being profiled for the proposal are Geraldine Laybourne and the design team of Fernau and Hartman and the design they did for the headquarters of Nickelodeon. Finally, Michael Bloomberg, who did the design himself and just worked very closely with the contractors to make sure that his vision of the corporate culture that he wanted for him employees was built. His open floor plan was no doubt influenced by his years as a trader at Solomon. Bloomberg L.P. is an open studio plan built around a food kiosk.

This gives you some background on the project. I am hoping that you will give Adelaide and Susan an appointment so they can discuss with you your working experiences with Mrs. Knoll as well as your own reasons for selecting the work of the Knoll group for the CBS building. I will call Ms. Williams in a few days to see if an appointment can be set up.

Sincerely,

Karen Mullarkey
