Dear Shu:

The University of Miami honors itself in honoring you. You bring to these ceremonies the grace and distinction that have characterized you and all your work for so many years - years during which you helped change the course of architecture but which, by some God-given magic, have touched you not at all.

I think of the artists you have supported and inspired over two long generations, such wonderful names among them: Eames, Saarinen, Bertoia, Gehri, Venturi. Each of them gained something critical from you, from your talent, your courage, your adamantine will, your blessed indefatigable style.

Loyalty is another word that applied here, Shu. It shines with a special radiance in you and has lighted Cranbrooke, New York, and Miami with your steady imperishable fire.

Tappy and I send you our affectionate greetings and congratulations for this recognition so richly deserved, and we wish with all our hearts that we could be there.

Love,
Vince
