CABLE ADDRESS METMUSART

METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART NEW YORK
DEPARTMENT OF DECORATIVE ARTS

December 18, 1912.

Mr. George Grey Barnard,
454 Fort Washington Avenue,
New York City.

Dear Mr. Barnard:

I beg to advise you that, at the meeting of the Purchasing Committee, held on December 17, it was voted to buy the pulpit of the 12th century from San Michele di Groppoli, upon the understanding that the price, $10,000, should include cost of transportation to the Museum and that the amount should be paid only upon delivery of the pulpit in the Museum. We are rather skeptical as to your ability to get this pulpit out of Italy as it has been published in Venturi's book on Italian Art and is well known to the Italian authorities. It will be a splendid acquisition and I would be glad if you could include some of the other objects in the church in the purchase.

Many thanks for the list of objects which you sent. I shall go over it carefully and see what I can recommend for the next meeting in January. I cannot do anything more about the cloisters at present as our available funds for the year are about exhausted. I should like to come and see the frescoes. I enjoyed lunching with you and Mrs. Barnard and was much impressed with the work you have in hand - especially the Lincoln.

Very truly yours,

W.R. Valentiner
