GYPSY MOTH SPRAY PROGRAM

THE PROGRAM IN BRIEF

Pennsylvania's gypsy moth spraying program is limited to forested residential, recreational, ad high-value special use areas. As a general rule, uninhabited private forest lands are not sprayed. Consequently, the vast majority of infested land (90%) is not sprayed but comes under a biological control program. The biological control program is aimed at resolving or reducing the gypsy moth problem over the long-term. In areas where people reside, however, the only immediate relief to caterpillar invasions can come about through spraying of a pesticide.

The spraying program is conducted solely because the public has demanded it, and the State Legislature has appropriated funds for this purpose. However, in no case is spraying "forced" upon anyone. The program is simply available to those who want it and meet the Guideline criteria. Private lands to be considered for spraying must be proposed in the fall by the county government.

DYLOX INSECTICIDE

The material to be sprayed is called Dylox which is registered by the U.S. Environment Protection Agency for gypsy moth control. It is considered safe to humans, pets, property, fish, honeybees, and wildlife and has been extensively used for gypsy moth control for many years. This determination has been made by EPA and by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources. We advise that all residents in the area take common precautions and move inside at the time of actual spraying to avoid spray droplet contact with the eyes. if eye contact is made, flush carefully with clean water to reduce irritation. The horticultural oil used in the spray mixture could cause small visible spots to appear on sprayed clothing. However, any residue from the spray contacting clothing or skin is not harmful, and can be removed by ordinary washing procedures.

This spray mixture may cause oil spots on car finishes. In most cases they are easily removed with soap and water, or if persistent, use a rubbing compound. Vehicle paint may be damaged if acrylic lacquer was used within 6 weeks of spraying. This is approximately the length of time it takes acrylic to properly cure or set. If you will be purchasing a new vehicle or having an older vehicle repainted with acrylic within 6 weeks of spraying, we strongly advise you to place it under cover on the day of spraying.
