Dear Mike,

Thank you for so promptly relaying my wish to hear from Sueo. He has sent me several photographs taken when we visited in 1949 on our way to Mills College. From his letter I could not tell whether he was teaching, painting a lot, showing his work, or? Sueo has always been so modest. It was good to hear from him.

When Creilly Pollock called me the other night I told her how surprised I was to hear from you. She said she had two paintings of yours. Do you remember that? I was so impressed with all the exhibitions you have had and the collections your work is represented in. I am astonished at your ability to provide for so many shows in Beverly Hills and in Japan, and all about the same time. Are you also teaching now?

Can’t believe grey hair has replaced the jet black of former years as revealed in the color photo you sent me. Of course, I always think of Yas’ students as they looked some forty years ago. The face still seems young- Japanese always look younger for long time than [[strikethrough]] Ame [[/strikethrough]] caucasions, I think. The head your chin is resting on in the photo is very eerie. It looks so remarkably real planted on [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] a body so unreal. [[strikethrough]] He looks I believe he is a [[/strikethrough]] You treat him like a good friend. [[strikethrough]] of yours. [[/strikethrough]]

I don’t know what happened to the two drawings you gave Yas in 1952. I thought the two I gave to the Met were those, since I never found any others. [[strikethrough]] (Many things I never found)[[/strikethrough]] You do have a good memory. The Hokusai sketchbook I never did see. However, out of fear that it might cause trouble, he [[strikethrough]] le [[/strikethrough]] asked me to hold on to the marriage book when the war started. At least that is what I [[strikethrough]] understood [[/strikethrough]] was told that it was meant for newlyweds. Some years ago I sold it- no longer being a newly-wed, but as you know a widow. Should a widow have such a book?! Don’t answer!

I am so glad to learn you are going to be in Japan about the time I will be there. Expect to [[strikethrough]] be (NYCunless possibly there is a later change) [[/strikethrough]] leave NYC on October 29th. I am breaking the long hours of the flight by stopping in Seattle for a day. On October 31 leave for Osaka and on to Okayama. Arrive Nov. 1st in Okayama and depart on, I believe, Nov. 4. Have not decided whether I will stop in L.A. on the way back to [[strikethrough]] W.S. [[/strikethrough]] NYC. [[strikethrough]] About [[/strikethrough]] On Nov. 2 there is to be the opening ceremony for the “Yasuo Kuniyoshi Museum” at the Fukutaki new publishing building, so I have been invited for this great occasion. And [[strikethrough]] it is [[/strikethrough]] the reason [[strikethrough]] I am [[/strikethrough]] of course for going to Japan as you can guess. I
