Cardogan & lady (both col'd r)eceived equal attentions with other [[strikethrough]] distinguished [[/strikethrough]] officials & private gentlemen and ladies of highest standing. I could but feel as I looked around where that agreeable circle that equality of character & culture was the true conditions of Equality in Social life  - I learned of other occasions where the governor had followed this same rule, & in conversations he assured me he could allow himself to adopt none other.

His opinion is that in our higher institutions of learning cultivated youth of both colors will come, at length, to associate on equal terms & that scholarship & equal refinement on either side will gradually settle the whole
