I expected to expend this money in N. Orleans. But, but as Dr. Chamberlain decided to join us there, & preferred, & would have another name, this thirteen thousand remains unexpended in our treasury.

When Dr's Vagell, Taylor & I were with you over the N. Orleans & the Raleigh cases, you will remember that we just came to this $13,000 when, as you seemed weary, I mentioned that I had heard that the "A.M.A. were disposed to part with the Avery Institute at Charleston S.C. & that we would be willing to take that. You then gave me a note to Rev. Geo. Whipple, & excused yourself further for "the present". I delivered the note. He had to write Mr. Smith, who was in the South. As soon as the long-delayed answer came, declining to sell, I arranged, as soon as I could, to visit you. Yesterday's interview was the result.

Engrossed as [[strikethrough]] was your attention [[/strikethrough]] you were yesterday, I could not consent to embarrass you by urging myself further upon your attention. I dread to do it now. But how I am to meet Mrs. Benedict, the donor of the $13,000, I do not see. We have other handsome sums coming in; but if you fail to duplicate another cent for us, I entrust that you fail not in this. The honor of us both seems at stake in this thing, - as well as the integrity of our [[margin]] society, through me its representative. Believe me dear bro. Yours with sincere prayer for your present & future prosperity.
James B. Simmons. [[/margin]]
