The funds in the Hannon case were deposited in the Freedmans Saving and Trust Co's Bank in New Orleans and as there were so many conflicting claims, and so long a time had elapsed since the embezzlement of the funds I did not deem it best or even prudent to take the currency with me to Lake Providence, but preferred paying by check, but when I came to make the payments I found that there was no currency in the country to cash them. I therefore by the advice of Mr. Masters and with the consent of the Freedmen, decided to pay them as far as practicable by squads. They were in most instances paid by checks drawn in favor of Mr Masters, these checks were afterwards brought by me to N.O. and the currency of denominations convenient for payment drawn from the Treasury Dept. and sent to Mr. Masters, as I have before stated Mr.
