{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
I know that Hawthorn said "easy reading is damn-hard writing."

[00:34:16]
[Laughter]

[00:34:20]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
And what I've tried to do is write so the reader is twenty pages in a book of mine before he knows he's reading.

[00:34:26]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
That's what I try for. I try to make the human voice come off those pages so that a black man in Alabama and a white woman in Des Moines, Iowa, and an Asian person in Hong-Kong, and a Spanish-speaking person in uh Madrid, and an Arab in Egypt, and a Jew in Israel, I want them to pick up that book and be reading it and say "that's the truth."

[00:35:02]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
It may not be the facts but that's the truth. The facts can obscure the truth. You can tell so many facts that you can't get to the truth. The places where the people who the times when the reasons why, the methods are blah blah blah.

[00:35:19]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
But the truth is something else. The truth speaks heart to heart.

[00:35:25]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
That's the truth.

[00:35:27]
{SPEAKER name="Johnnetta Cole"}
I admire so much about you my seasoned sister friend.

[00:35:34]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
Yes Ma'am

[00:35:36]
{SPEAKER name="Johnnetta Cole"}
But, one of the things that I really admire these days is how techy you are!
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
[Laughs]

[00:35:44]
{SPEAKER name="Johnnetta Cole"}
I mean, anybody who has five million friends on Facebook.

[00:35:52]
[Laughter]

[00:35:54]
{SPEAKER name="Johnnetta Cole"}
Five million.

[00:35:58]
[Applause]

[00:36:03]
{SPEAKER name="Johnnetta Cole"}
I'd love to hear how you got into this
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
Well..
{SPEAKER name="Johnnetta Cole"}
lucky stuff.

[00:36:08]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
Well, now I I do this, I do take peoples children and especially daughters. Because I have the greatest son in the world.
{SPEAKER name="Johnnetta Cole"}
Mhmm.

[00:36:16]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
But I take people's daughters sometimes. And uh I don't take them and keep them, I mean well I keep them but I don't let, I don't tell them, the real mother, the born mother, that she can't see the child. I don't do that, but I do take them and one of my daughters is Oprah Winfrey.

[00:36:34]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
Oprah came down and she was visiting me and came in had an iPad and she was oh talking and texting and carrying on.

[00:36:46]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
And I said, she did that for several days and I said what is that and she said "it's an iPad".

[00:36:52]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
She went away and um my mail came and my diamond one of my daughters Lydia Stucky said that I think it is from one of your best friends and maybe your daughter and we opened it and it was an iPad.

[00:37:09]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
So, I have learned how to find out my Facebook numbers and I learned how to text, no, eMail Oprah [laughter] I can eMail Oprah. That's all I know how to do on that

[00:37:28]
[laughter] [clapping]

[00:37:38]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
It's alright. So it's alright I can, I'm OK with that. When I need more I have Lydia and I have my grandson who is really a techie, one of my grandsons and that is that Colin Johnson. Colin knows all about that stuff and he can fix me up. He can hook me up he told me, he can hook me up!

[00:38:03]
{SPEAKER name="Johnnetta Cole"}
You know Dr Maya you are, you are really beloved by young people.

[00:38:07]
{SPEAKER name="Dr. Maya Angelou"}
Yes I'm grateful.

[00:38:10]
{SPEAKER name="Johnnetta Cole"}
and if it's if one of the most um encouraging and hopeful things that I experienced to see how so many young uns as I affectionately, and respectfully, call young people look to you
