General O.O. Howard

Dear General

I have a proposal to make; it is this: can you continue me for this & two months following on half pay, i.e. $50 00/0 per month, & the other half to be paid in July & August? The truth is I cannot endure the thought of not serving under you, & inaction is unbearable from every point. I preferred not to accept the leave of absence granted, although I fully appreciate the kindness which prompted it.

I worked up to the 4th inst.

With respectful regards
I am Your faithful Servant
Thomas Andrew.
