Dear General
Yesterday & to-day I endeavoured to speak to you for a few moments, but you were either engaged, or absent. I adopt this method of making known to you the following facts. When I received on the 4th March the official letter stating that my appointment was revoked I asked Capt. Piatt if I must consider it as final. He suggested in your absence I had better continue my work as the Cadet Lists were greatly in arrear (these I have consolidated for many months & chiefly apart from office hours) & await your return. On completion of the Lists I saw General Whittlesey & said I felt obliged for leave of absence but preferred to go on with the Indexes. I did so up to the 1st inst. & afterward
