The former letter of Geo. Butler was fully understood. When the aid was asked Here was money for expenses for school purposes, and had the people moved promptly the aid would have been granted. But all the funds were expended last year. Then Congress was asked to make further appropriations, but refused. Gen Howard can do no more than inform Mr. Butler and others in like circumstances that he has no means to help them. I regret very much and so does Genl. Howard, that the good work of furnishing school houses so the destitute freedmen cannot be continued. I hope the people will not despair but continue their efforts until they succeed with help from abroad.
