"7th" Public sentiment amongst the whites is decidedly and bitterly opposed to schools for educating colored children and though many who have opposed the freedom of the slaves, recognize the necessity of Education as a concomitant of freedom, still I do no think a school could be conducted here without the presence of U.S. troops to ward off persecution &c

"8th" I have already mentioned the general capacity of the negro for education.  Whether this would lead to a persistent effort on their part, I have no means to determine
