Dear Toshiko,

Thank you for your good hand written letter which came along about two weeks ago...time seems to just glide by very quickly....I never intended to have a birthday marked 71 but two weeks ago today it happened....I was so involved with the crafts fair that it gets pushed by the side.

The weather for the fair was very uneven this year but it worked out well. My earnings were not as much as the last two years but it was good anyway...I always seem to get enought(sic) to pay for my activity each year...my 3 former students did very well and continue to have a following for the work they do. I take a great deal of pride and find some pleasure in this...I'm still plugging along and ma looking forward to the clay activity this summer. Connie and her daughter are going to work with me again and that is a pleasure and is very helpful for this achy body does not like to be driven as much as it once was...I've let a lot go with the yard this spring. There is a good excuse for the rain has been so persistent that gardening has been out of the questiong......

The family was in attendance this week end for mother and the Mother's Day thing. She seems pretty good over all....we have not finished the interview project yet. The young woman who is doing it is very busy but she has transcribed some of it and we'll try to pull it into some kind of form before long...we may have finished all of the tapes...maybe a couple of more to tie up loose ends..

Tom has been good for the most part and is in good form....Lewis had a fine birthday dinner for a number of us who have birthday in May...if he likes you and is interested he can do things very well and with some real flair.

I'm sorry to report that the iris are not so good tis year. I have some very nice ones here and at New Deal and usually they are very lush. They do need some attention but I think that the uneven weather has been a factor in their not showing off so much this year...just the plain purple ones, which are the Tennessee state flower are not stong this season and usually they are showy under the most difficult circumstance.

Hope you are in good form and enjoying living...

Love,
[illegible]
