Paris March 22nd 1936

Dear Mr Barrie -

My health is quite a little better so that means every day I work on small pictures and with some success, but I am not able as yet to commence new pictures of any importance, and do not see my self doing so this summer, but if Mr. Haverty would send me the picture I am fairly sure I should be able to put it in good condition this summer.

As to the matter of transportation, I should hope Mr. H- would be willing to pay it- besides this there is a duty demanded by the French of returned pictures, and if Mr. Haverty would give a  small value less than he paid as it is damaged, I will try to pay duty.

I have given up my studio in Paris, which I have had for 30 years & it is only in the summer I could work on a picture like Mr. H —— -. I am then in the country & have more room - This does not mean that the quality of the work has lost but that I am not so energetic & can do less- and also that I have financial worries along with it. The exchange value of the $ being only 60 cents has very much upset me financially.

The money I had been able to save I have put it into property, and now my property is monthly rented to work people, who cannot find work and those houses which formerly made a good
