Endorsements confirmed from E. & M. Book Vol. 2, page 334, on Comm'n from Jas. H. Alexander in behalf of Isabella Harris (freedwoman), who desires to obtain possession of her child:

(Signed) E.C. Woodruff A.S.A.C.

Monticello Fla., May 8th, 1867.
Respectfully returned to Maj. E.C. Woodruff, with information that I am personally acquainted with H.S. Linton, and have examined him in reference to within business, and he makes the following explanation: that he employed the man Abel as his agent to get hands for him, instructing him to be careful not to hire any one who was in a contract, and that he was unaware of Edna Harris being in a contract. Said Abel has turned out to be a great rascal, having defrauded Linton and victimized him out of a considerable sum of money in getting the hands. It has cost Linton $1200 to get hands, and only four of them are with him now. Said Edna is with H.S. Linton now. She signed a contract voluntarily in my office for $10 per month. She acknowledged to Mr. Linton lately that she left her mother to come here and earn money for her. Mr. Linton makes the following proposition, viz: that he is willing to pay Edna's expenses back to her mother. She has already overdrawn her account at the stores, for which Mr. Linton is responsible. Knowing the man to be responsible and sustaining a high character for honesty and integrity, and owning a plantation 10 miles from Monticello, I did not think it necessary to put him under bond, as he can be found at any time. He has been more the victim than the victimizer. I shall write Mrs. Harris, Edna's mother, and make her acquainted with his proposition.
