I have the honor to transmit herewith, copies of the records of Clinch Co court in the cases of Viney Scarlett & George Hitch - Freedpeople. I questioned several parties with regard to the matter, seperately, & from them heard the following. "Viney Scarlett - had no witnesses at the trial and no one to defend her case; her husband wanted to testify in the matter & the Judge told him that if he said a word, he would give him a hundred lashes. Viney was stripped to the waist & given 65 lashes in the Court House. She was not confined, neither were the costs paid - her husband refused to pay them. Grace McLendon (who testified against Viney) afterwards told Viney that Mrs Livingston told her (Grace) what to say
