Art As I See It

51 Exhibitors in 51st Annual Olean Art Show

By MARION E. COUGHLIN
Interesting coincidence, that we should have 51 exhibitors in the current Olean Art Association Annual Exhibition at Olean Public Library, in this, Olean's 51st year of annual art shows.
This exhibit has many fine award winning artworks, and according to the statements of the judges, it is well presented with much technical expertise and a wide range of variety and style. "A show to be proud of," said judges John and Sue Hiester of Jamestown Community College in Jamestown.

It will conclude on Friday, May 22, and award winners and names of the new officers will soon be listed in another article by the publicity chairman of OAA.
The only other exhibit taking place in Olean for a period of time is the show of watercolors by Joanne Conroy of Allegany and works by Gerry Carls Lepine, Cazenovia, which include oil, watercolor and egg tempera paintings. Both exhibits will be on display in the lobby of St. Francis Hospital during May and June.
At Alfred University Helen Martin, Olean, and Judy Wesley, Allegany, had solo exhibits of their art works last month and during May at the library of Alfred University, Geraldine Nash, of Olean has an exhibit of 25 pieces of pottery and 16 drawings.

PENNBANK 1981 Art and Photography Exhibit will take place in Bradford May 26 through June 5. Lellie Evans, Sandra MacFarland and Marion Coughlin have entered paintings and Jay Larmon and Dr. William MacFarland will exhibit their photographs.
In Jamestown, James Prendergast Library Art Gallery is showing a local private collection of rugs designed by Alexander Calder. The 6 by 8 foot Rugs were executed by the Indians of Guatamala and are being exhibited for the first time. This display will continue through May 26 followed June 4-30 by Art of the Printmaker, an exhibition of prints organized by Burchfield Center.
Chautauqua National 24th Annual received 2535 entries from 49 state from which they will select the show that will open in their gallery June 19-July 12.
Something new has been added. Artists materials will carry a warning label in the future. The effort to write voluntary standards for the chronic toxicity labeling of art and craft materials was launched in Orlando, Fla., in January 1981, at a meeting of the American Society for Testing and Materials. It is estimated that the entire population which can be adversely affected by toxic chemicals found in some art supplies is 150 million persons, according to a release received from Artists Equity Association, Inc., Washington, D.C. Toxicity labeling is only part of Artists Equity's drive for a quality standard for artists paints and other materials.

ON JUNE 9, ADS and the Small Business Administration will conduct a workshop on management and marketing for visual artists in the Grand Island Holiday Inn from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. For information call 856-7520.
At Albright Knox Gallery, Sheila Isham Recent Works: and East and West: Paintings/Poems by Sheila Isham, are the two exhibits on view until June 14. From May 12-14 there will be a preview of New Works by Area Artists Collection 81-82, present by Albright Knox Members' Gallery which invited over 250 artists to submit works for the rental and sales collection. Two watercolors by Marion Coughlin were accepted for this exhibit.
