Dear Connie, 

I am on a train from Paris to [[strikethrough]] Normandy [[/strikethrough]] Brittany - the western tip. Itaka and I decided to take off and rest and walk on the beach there for 4 days: we both need it. Paris has been vibrating with excit ment around the world championship soccer games. The Americans don't tune into this as much as the rest of the world, I believe, 

but you know the fervor surrounding baseball and football "World Series" etc., so you can imagine the sustained frantic attention we've just witnessed and survived in Paris after a month's intensive [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] daily bombardment of matches. I watched and thoroughly enjoyed many of them. It all culminated in France winning the World Cup (champions for 4 years now) and "Bastille Day" fireworks and parade within 24 hours. A kind of euphoria reigns here. Chirac's popularity is at an all-time high and his press conference was solidly received and applauded by left-right-and center.
 
I'm writing you this description because it is such a rare atmosphere in France that we are all amazed. It is a good time to be here.

Connisimo, I am truly sorry to have missed your 85th birthday party. Another celebration is merited when I come back to the U.S. It looks like I'll fly to Nebraska in mid August. A warm prospect! Carla Hanzel will accompany me and organize a small show at her old college = HASTINGS College - which
