E L Kennedy Architect Planner 160 East 48 New York 10017 2124861499 SHEILA HICKS: Artist and weaver of wall hangings. She is called the most innovative force in wall hanging art by Mildred Constantine of the Museum of Modern Art. Yet her work is more than weaving - it explodes the weavers' art. Her palate incorporates the myriad properties of the yarn, refining the completed work to that simplicity known only to restraint. Her work ranges from individual pieces to integral components of the architectural interior. In fact she is a complete craftsman. Miss Hicks spins, dyes, and weaves all her work. Examples may be found in the Bank of Rothchild in Paris; the auditorium of the Ford Foundation; and the TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport. A young artist, she studied painting at Yale University under Josef Albers and George Kubler, won a scholarship to study in Peru, and subsequently turned to weaving. Principal museums of the world own and have shown her hangings; most recently her one "man" show at Rabat, Morocco, and the show of wall hangings at the Museum of Modern Art. Presently Jack Larsen and Miss Constantine are writing a book on wall hangings which concentrates on her work.
