Thos B Witmer. Dear Sir Yours of Feb 26 was rec'd a few days ago and I answer it at my first leisure
My friend, Mr Choutian was mistaken in what he told you as to the price of duplicates of the two Statues "The Slave" and "Eve" The copies already engaged of the Slave are for £600.00 each and that sum would be my price for another Eve. I cannot afford to take less
One of the copies of the Slave is for Mr Bobb of N Orleans who sent me an order for it some time ago, the one for Lord Ward is now nearly done in marble - - -
Should your friends conclude (after knowing my terms) to have one of my Statues I promise that it shall have its place in succession on the list of my engagements and be alluded to accordingly
The above is confidential
I enclose a note for the Editors of the Saturday Courier which I beg you to send or deliver to them. It relates to part of an article under the head of, "The [[?]] Crucifix" published in that paper of Jan [[strikethrough]] 26 [[/strikethrough]] 31st 1846 in which I am made to say that the crucifix is the most exquisite work of art I have ever seen! and it is stated that I was one of the number who made long and hazardous journeys to see it -- I have no doubt that the editors obtained their information from Mr Lester for it is not a greater untruth than may be found in many parts of the works containing what [[/strikethrough]]
