August 13, 1827 Remarks by Hiram Powers about the spots on his eyes

I remember of first discovering these in May 1827. The appearance of them then according to my recollection was with very little difference as now they were of a light yellow transparent color were numerous-and varying in their appearance. I could discover the appearance of waves. They were probably there before I recollect of having seen what I mistook for flies or dirt upon my nose. The same group appears larger or smaller at different items and the fibres are magnified from this size (see xerox of original letter) to this (xerox of original) according to the light in which they are seen. They appear smallest in a clear cool atmosphere and largest in a smoky or a dull rainy day. There is one very clear in the right of the right eye apparently attached rather to high for a discerning view, it shape and size thus (see xerox of original) Sometimes they are all confused in an unintelligible and undelineable mass. My eyes are full--scarcely one clear spot - the round specks by the thousands are now about the same size as formerly say from (xerox) one disconnected span thus (xerox)
On the longest days disappear about 8 o'clock. I have observed that I cannot see so distinctly by considerable with the right eye as with the left. I can fine no cause for it, as yet there is no disemable obstacle fixed before the sight. The observation appears to be flickering and unsteady as tho I could not come at a proper focus. I think my left eye was always best. The most external appearance is very indistinct. It is extensive in the right eye and appears curdled. I am convinced that the cause of the unequal appearance in bulk is the moving parts to and from the external of the eye.

There is in the left eye a little dark spot something in size and effect like that in the right that I think always must have been there.

The most conspicuous ones in the left is as much colored as any in the right.
I can see to read this writing ten or twelve feet off.

I cant say that these affairs have injured my sight for any yet. I can see as fine things as every excepting when the large cluster is in the way and even then close too, say two feet, with tolerable accuracy.
