Dear Hedda Sterne:
Your paintings gave me real and heartful pleasure. They are the kind of statement of a living Life that means something other than the self-indulgent selfull-expressionism of the "Accidentalists" whom I increasingly detest.
However, I do indeed understand the hatred you mentioned that you felt [[strikethrough]] you [[/strikethrough]] and roused. The destructive pimps of civilization always hate, and alas, frequently devastate, the creative minorities. You have the double misfortune of knowing your craft, and being concerned with beauty - triple misfortune indeed! - also caused in the hereditary [[strikethrough]] line [[/strikethrough]] line of people who are concerned with putting pain on canvas (Greco, Cezanne, Braque). Those pictures of yours are very beautiful indeed and I think Tower #2 is one of the most exhilarating paintings I've encountered in a very long time. The Direction you indicate fills me with courage, delight, and a sense of creative well-being.
Greatefully yours,
Michael O'S.
