I have the freedmen employed at cleaning bricks, there has been a great many kept busy which I have paid 75¢ per day. I have found no sale for the bricks as yet, but think beyond a doubt that they will find a ready sale.
All houses formerly occupied by the Rebel Gov. are rented and most of the proceeds from the same have been appropriated to the benefit of the poor distressed freedmen. Some monies thus collected I still have on hand and by the sale of the brick before mentioned expect have a fund on hand but at present its amount is so small that [[strikethrough]] I [[/strikethrough]] it is not any use to report it this month. Do I right in using monies thus collected for benefit of distressed freedmen?
Printing Stationary and often expenses about the office have all been from monies collected from fines & without expense to the Gov. In fact I have and am now trying to make this office selfsustaining as far as possible and which I think I will be able to do. The news of this district has not been all yet taken but I will report the result as soon as possible.
Too great results should not be expected at once, but I feel as the advice given to freedmen and the way made clear to them that all will be soon in harmony and good feeling will exist between the freedmen and their former masters.
I have called on Treasurer agent- Commander of Post for sutch monies as had been collected for Fines and sutch like . They report they they have not any money on hand - all has been paid out (as they say) to pay expenses. No monies whatever have been turned over to me - nor can I get any
