them from starving up to this time - but now the wood is gone and they must starve if they are not helped. There are ninety on the place mostly women & children. I have two soldiers guarding the place for the protection of the Freedmen.

Now if I am permitted I can put a white man in the place to see after things, and I will see after him, and I think we can make the people a support. If we can get rations & send to them until they can raise something to subsist on these people are all Refugees from Virginia sent here by Mrs Standard during the war. I have heard that Mrs Standard has gone to Europe & she is under the impression that the government is taking care of her Freedman. They can be made to make a support if they can be helped until they can raise something but if they are not helped immediately they must suffer. I will send a Ration Return and hope it will be approved by you that the Suffering may be releaved
