THE DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS OF THE CITY OF DETROIT ARTS COMMISSION RALPH H. BOOTH, PRESIDENT ALBERT KAHN EDSEL B FORD CHARLES T. FISHER COMMISSIONERS W. R. VALENTINER. ART DIRECTOR CLYDE H. BURROUGHS. SECRETARY December 14, 1928. Mr. Germain Seligmann, 3 East 51st Street, New York City. Dear Mr. Seligmann: I enjoyed greatly seeing the extraordinarily fine French male portrait of about 1480. It is certainly a painting of high quality, and all the more remarkable with the rareness of French portraits of this period. Since you have Dr. Friedlander's attribution to the Maitre de Moulin, you have the opinion certainly of the best connoisseur of this field, and I do not doubt that if I had time to go into the study of this field more thoroughly than I can just now, I would come to a similar result. With the short study which I made of this painting, I must confess that in some ways the portrait seemed to me even more refined in execution, more expressive, and more plastic in modelling, that those portraits of the Maitre de Moulin which I know, and which have generally a little more flatness and simplified decorative design that your picture. Thank you very much for sending me the interesting book on Masquerier, which I did not know and which will be an excellent addition to my library. With kind regards, Very sincerely yours, W. R. Valentiner WRV/C
