THE DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS OF THE CITY OF DETROIT ARTS COMMISSION EDSEL B. FORD, PRESIDENT ALBERT KAHN ROBERT H. TANNAHILL EDGAR B. WITCOMB COMMISSIONERS W. R. VALENTINER ART DIRECTOR CLYDE H. BURROUGHS SECRETARY November 27, 1934 RS Mr. Rene Seligmann, Jacques Seligmann and Company, 3 East 51st Street, New York City. Dear Mr. Seligmann: Thank you for your letter. We all enjoyed very much having you here, and I hope you will come soon again. Regarding the Terborch, the painting which you saw at Knoedler's and the Thompson picture are one and the same. Mr. Thompson had given the picture to Knoedler on commission, but has since had it sent back here. It is an excellent portrait of the famous mayor of Amsterdam, who also was painted by Rembrandt. The picture comes from the Ridder Collection and is well authenticated. There is another portrait of the same person by Terborch in the St. Louis museum. With kind regards to Germain Seligmann and yourself, Sincerely yours, W. R. Valentiner WRV:JH
